Where to study in Australia: choosing between six cities

Sources reviewed: 31 October 2026. Visa and cost references checked again on 1 November 2026.
Choosing where to study in Australia involves more than picking a city from a photograph. A useful decision brings together the programme you need, its actual campus, suitable accommodation and a budget you can sustain.
This guide explains how to compare Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane: the six cities within Aussie Dreams’ confirmed coverage. City coverage does not confirm a school, campus, course, price or available place. Check the specific offering before booking.
Start with the course and campus
Define what you want to learn and why. If you are choosing between language study and vocational training, read our English and VET comparison. Request written entry requirements, course content, assessment, attendance rules, duration and timetable. VET does not guarantee fewer class days or employment.
Check the provider and course in CRICOS, the official Australian register. Then confirm the address of the campus delivering your programme. A provider can have several locations; a city name does not tell you what your daily journey will be. CRICOS registration does not establish an agreement with our agency.
Six cities: what to check in each one
Gold Coast: match the neighbourhood to your daily routine
If you want to consider a coastal setting, include the Gold Coast in your shortlist. Its coastline and natural areas are part of its appeal, but accommodation near a beach may be far from your campus. Compare specific addresses and journeys before deciding. Our guide to living on the Gold Coast explores the city in more detail.

Melbourne: choose an area connected to your studies
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria. Compare your campus with the neighbourhoods where you could realistically live, rather than treating the whole urban area as one location. Check connections, transfers and service disruptions for the times your classes start and finish.

Adelaide: compare your total costs
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia. Include it if you want to explore this region, while checking whether it is affordable for your particular plans. Obtain current prices for the same type of course and accommodation you are considering elsewhere. Check the journey to the actual campus as well.

Perth: explore an option in Western Australia
Perth is the capital of Western Australia. Consider how it fits your studies and preferences, rather than choosing it because of a job promise. For each accommodation option, check the complete trip to campus, including walking, transfers and the journey home after class.

Sydney: compare specific neighbourhoods and campuses
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. A useful comparison needs your study address and concrete accommodation options. Use equivalent locations and accommodation types when comparing cities. Check journey duration, service frequency, transfers and estimated fares with the official transport planner.

Brisbane: check connections for your everyday journeys
Brisbane is the capital of Queensland. Its river and transport connections form part of city life. Check which services reach your specific address; proximity to class depends on where you live and study. Living in Brisbane and living on the Gold Coast involve different locations and daily journeys.

Compare budgets using the same cost categories
There is no single price for studying in Australia. To compare two cities, use the same course type, duration, dates, room type and included expenses. Record the date and source of each quote. Leave unconfirmed amounts open until you can check them.
Study: enrolment, tuition, materials and other compulsory charges itemised by the provider. Check payment dates and cancellation terms.
Preparation and arrival: applicable visa charges, insurance, flights, initial accommodation and transfers. Check each amount for your circumstances and dates.
Monthly living expenses: rent, utilities, food, transport, phone and personal spending. Separate bills included in the rent from those paid separately.
Cash available on arrival: distinguish upfront payments and deposits from regular monthly spending. Keep a buffer for unexpected costs and a period without employment income.
For a planning comparison, convert weekly rent to an average monthly equivalent using weekly rent × 52 ÷ 12. Multiplying by four understates that average. Your actual contract still determines when payments fall due.
Study Australia explains living and education costs. Its explanatory page states November 2023, while the calculator cites November 2025 for several categories. These are estimates with their own assumptions and dates: check each input and obtain current prices. This difference was checked on 1 November 2026. Actual living costs may exceed the financial minimum required for a visa.
A practical way to make your decision
Shortlist two or three cities according to your preferences and study goals.
Obtain verified course, campus and date options. Resolve any entry-requirement gaps before comparing the tourist attractions.
Find comparable accommodation and test outward and return journeys in the official planners at your actual class times.
Complete the same budget categories and mark what remains unconfirmed. Consider the weather you are comfortable with, your preferred surroundings and your support network.
Choose using the information you have gathered. If the budget only works with immediate employment, revise the plan before committing to payments.
Visa and work conditions depend on your circumstances
A city choice or enrolment does not guarantee a visa, employment or residence. Read the current Student visa subclass 500 requirements from Home Affairs and check your own conditions. Condition 8105 generally limits work to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, with specific exceptions. Check your grant letter and VEVO before working.

Common questions when choosing a city
Which Australian city is cheapest for students?
There is no single answer for every student. Compare current equivalent quotes and add accommodation, transport, study and preparation costs. A cheaper room may involve a different journey; calculate both before deciding.
Can I pay for my stay with a job after arrival?
Build your budget around funds you actually have. Finding work can take time and any job must fit your visa conditions. Allow for a period without income and make an alternative plan if the search takes longer.
Does city coverage confirm every school in that city?
No. Gold Coast, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane are the confirmed cities, but each agreement, campus, course, intake, price and available place must be checked separately. References on our schools page require confirmation of the offering.
